Stranded Windsurfer Rescued on Robins Island

Windsurfer assessed for hypothermia after drifting from Southampton to Robins Island.

A 68-year-old Center Moriches man who drifted into Peconic Bay alone on a windsurfing board and landed on Robins Island was rescued by Southampton Town Bay Constables shortly after noon on Friday, police said.

After receiving a call of a missing windsurfer at 11:50 a.m., the Suffolk County Police helicopter located John Vanderwolf on the northwest side of Robins Island at 12:22 p.m., wearing a wetsuit and standing in the water on a shoal, police said. Southampton Bay Constables, , and the U.S. Coast Guard were also dispatched in the search.

At the time of the incident, Peconic Bay was extremely rough with 4- to 7- foot waves with southwesterly wind gusts up to 45 mph, and the water temperature was about 40 degrees.

Vanderwolf was transported to the Robins Island dock in New Suffolk and was assessed for hypothermia byrescue squad and was released, police said.

IMO, not the smartest day to be out there. But very happy to hear of the safe response by responders.

What a waste of Government resources for the FOOL wind-surfing on a day not fit for it !! Thank you for wasting Tax-Payor money.

I remember in the past whenever anyone landed on Robin's island a security guard would come around to tell people to get off. I am glad that the man is alright and thankful that the rescuers were there for him. Unfortunately, I feel that this man should not have been out there in the first place and certainly not alone. While I respect his sportsmanship, his act was not accidental but premeditated and in that regard he should certainly face some type of fine an share in the expenses of his rescue. This should be compliment with some type of psychiatric treatment. What in hell was he thinking? Luckily no responders where hurt either, but there is always the risk that when you engage in this type of activity you might endanger the lives of others. If you engage in risky behavior, don't put others at risk. That's true for any sport.

Right with you Jerry Can.

Suffolk County Police Aviation had to risk their lives and helicopter to help with this too.

Jerry Can was right on it when he accurately noted that this "voluntary" act, at a ridiculous time of year, requiring all the emergency services called on should come at a cost/fee.

And, now that we know how easy it is to thwart the law, we must wonder...how many potentialRead More terrorists are residing here, thanks to breaks in our security system? Maybe the Mexico/U.S. border shouldn't be our top priority.

even worse?...When I had the publisher of North Fork Magazine contact me regarding the blatantRead More violation, what were his comments?? To add further insult to injury, he said & I quote: "I thought I was doing Greenport a favor...all of the businesses there are suffering...this paper doesn't make any money...sure I have advertisers but they don't pay their invoices...maybe if the cover of the magazine brings business to Greenport, maybe those merchants will pay their bill.."

Better yet, rather than pay mag's invoice. send $$$ to Artist.

And he really still doesn't see that he's stealing from the artist to 'bring business to Greenport'?Read More The effrontery of his comment leaves me aghast. Of ALL people who should grasp the concept of plagiarism and copyright laws, it should be a newspaper editor/publisher! Cropping out her signature proves they knew full well that they were stealing her work. I'd suggest the artist contact a copyright attorney pronto. I'm always astonished when something like this occurs when a simple phone call to the artist might have been successful in allowing him to use her work WITH her signature intact instead of doing something so underhanded.
