Route 48 Section Closed After Car Crashes Into LIPA Pole

Authorities close highway after utility pole falls and blocks traffic on Saturday.

A Mattituck man was treated for injuries and a section of Route 48 just west of Albertson Lane was closed to traffic after a car crash caused a Long Island Power Authority utility pole to fall across the roadway the morning of Jan. 5, Southold Town Police report.

Craig Durland, 39, of Mattituck was involved in an early morning car accident just before 6 a.m. on Route 48, when he struck a deer with his vehicle and subsequently struck a utility pole, police said. The utility pole was broken at its base and fell across the roadway. Durland was treated at the scene and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital by members of the Greenport Fire Department rescue squad as a precaution, police said.

Route 48 was closed from Boisseau Avenue in Southold to Albertson Lane in Greenport for most of the day as LIPA workers replaced the utility pole.
