Riverhead Man Charged with Causing Motorcycle Accident Sunday Morning

After Sunday's late-morning motorcycle accident in Southold that caused serious injuries to the riders, Southold Town police charge Joseph Pelis with failing to yield the right of way to the motorcyclists.

Joseph Pelis, 69, of Riverhead was charged with failing to yield the right of way and driving an uninspected vehicle after he was involved in a motorcycle accident while driving a truck southbound on Hortons Lane in Southold on Sunday at 11:04 a.m.

Police said Pelis attempted to turn left onto Travelers Street, when he struck a motorcycle driven by off-duty Southold Town resident and police officer Peter Dicandia, 40, who was carrying a passenger, his wife Sharon Dicandia, 41, also of Southold. Dicandia was heading north on Hortons Lane when Pelis turned in front of the motorcycle, causing the collision, police said.

The couple was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment to serious injuries. Mr. Pelis was not injured.
