Tomas Jonas Lopez-Giron, 35, of Riverhead was charged with second-degree attempted assault, second-degree menacing and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon on May 9 at 8:40 a.m., after police responded to a report of a dispute at an East Marion jobsite, police said.

A cement truck driver told police that a contractor, later identified as Lopez-Giron, first threatened him with a hammer and then came at him with a machete, police said. Although the victim did not receive any injuries, the machete did cut through his jacket and left marks on his arm, police said.

The contractor had left the scene prior to arrival of police, but the driver later spotted the contractor at a deli on Main Street in Riverhead, police said. He called Riverhead Police, who detained the suspect until Southold Police could respond. Giron was arrested, processed at Southold Town Police headquarters in Peconic, where he was released on bail and will be arraigned in Southold Town Justice Court on a date in June.
