Police: Drivers Suffer Injuries After Three-Car Collision

Three North Fork women were hospitalized after a car accident in Laurel last week.

reported that three drivers were taken to local hospitals for treatment to injuries following a three-car pile up in Laurel last Tuesday at 2:34 p.m.

Mattituck resident Virginia McCaffery, 42, was driving west on Route 25 in Laurel when she had a coughing attack, became distracted and did not see a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Mattituck resident Noemi Oliva, who was stopped in the westbound lane trying to make a left-hand turn into a driveway, police said. McCaffery's car hit Oliva's vehicle in the rear, pushing both vehicles in the eastbound traffic and causing Oliva's vehicle to strike a vehicle driven by Colleen Merz, 46, of Mattituck, head-on, police said.

Members of the, and Jamesport Fire Departments responded to the scene. Mattituck Fire Department members took McCaffery to , Cutchogue Fire Department members took Merz to and Oliva was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center. All three drivers suffered internal injuries, police said.
