Police: Ridge Man Saved After Drifting in LI Sound Current

Southold Town Police rescue a man who'd fallen from his boat into the Long Island Sound near East Marion Tuesday night.

Lawrence Beirele, 52, of Ridge was pulled from Long Island Sound waters on Tuesday at 10:20 p.m. after he'd fallen from his boat that was moored off of in Orient, reported.

Police responded to a call from an East Marion woman who'd reported hearing calls for help from the water off Rocky Point Road in East Marion, police said. Officers on the scene found Beirele drifting with the current at the location mentioned and guided him ashore with flashlights, police said. Members of the checked and released the man, who was then transported to police headquarters in Peconic where he awaited a ride home, police said.
