Police Report: DWI Charge and MVA

Southold Town Police responded to a motor vehicle accident and reported one incident of driving while intoxicated last week.

Jaime Herrers, 21, of Peconic was charged with driving while intoxicated on Jan. 5 at 11:05 p.m. after he lost control of his 1997 Toyota on Route 48 near Mill Road in Mattituck. Police said that Herres was driving west, lost control of the car, drove onto the median, spun around and struck a guard rail, then left the scene. Officers stopped him a short distance from the scene of the accident and he was found to be intoxicated, police said.

Police and fire authorities had to divert traffic on Jan. 6 at 1:42 p.m. due to an overturned truck on Route 48 near the intersection of Depot Lane in Cutchogue. Police said that Giuseppi Racanelli, 86, was heading north on Route 48 near Depot Lane with passenger Rosa Racanelli, 85, and failed to yield to Harold Thilberg, 79, who was traveling with passenger, Dorothy Thilberg, 74, west on Route 48. Racanelli's vehicle struck Thilberg's truck, causing it to overturn. and members of the responded to the scene, and all four people involved in the crash were transported to for treatment.

None of the defendants have been convicted of a crime, but were charged with the above offenses. They are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
