Police: Peconic Man Steals License Plate For Own Vehicle

Julian JavierMelchor is charged with numerous vehicular offenses New Year's Day.

The following information was supplied by the Southold Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate guilt.

Julian A. JavierMelchor, 34, of Peconic, was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, no insurance, and no registration on Jan. 1 at 9:08 a.m., after a Southold Town Police officer on routine patrol on Route 25 in Mattituck observed the vehicle that JavierMelchor was operating had switched license plates, police said. After conducting a traffic stop and investigation, the officer found that the license plates had been stolen from a parked vehicle without the knowledge of the owner, police said. He was arrested, transported to police headquarters in Peconic and held for arraignment.
