Police: Peconic Man is Killed After Being Struck and Dragged by Vehicles

Police are still investigation the death of a Peconic man who was struck Sunday night by three drivers — one of whom dragged the man then fled the scene.

A 31-year-old Peconic man was killed after being struck in turn by three vehicles — one of which dragged him after he became stuck in its undercarriage — on Route 48 in Peconic on Sunday night, reported.

Nery Javier-Lopez was found dead in the roadway with two vehicles pulled to the side of the road by police officers on the scene at 11:03 p.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Route 48 and Henry's Lane in Peconic, police said. Investigation revealed that Javier-Lopez had been walking north across Route 48 in the dark and walked into the path of a vehicle driven by George Apostolou, 50, of Brooklyn, police said.

After Javier-Lopez was struck by Apostolou's vehicle, a white van hit him and dragged him after he became stuck underneath the vehicle, the driver of which fled the scene westbound on Route 48, police said. After becoming dislodged from the van's undercarriage, Javier-Lopez was then struck by a vehicle driven by Robert Carpenter, 29, of East Quogue, who was also heading west on Route 48, police said.
