Police: Islip Terrace Man Dies Following Fatal Motorcycle Crash

Southold Town Police reveal identity of the man who died following Sunday's motorcycle accident at the intersection of Route 48 and Albertson Lane in Greenport.

William Helmsorig, 45, of Islip Terrace died on Sunday from injuries sustained during a on Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Route 48 and Albertson Lane in Greenport, reported on Monday.

Helmsorig was traveling east on Route 48 around noon on Sunday when Effie Diakos, 75, of East Marion, who was driving a car west on Route 48, failed to yield the right of way to Helmsorig when she attempted a left-hand turn onto Albertson Lane, and the vehicles collided, police said.

Members of the responded to the scene at 12:08 p.m. A helicopter was originally called in to transport the subjects to the hospital but was later canceled. Both subject were transported by ambulance to , where Helmsorig was pronounced dead, police said. Diakos was treated for injuires.
