UPDATE: Church Hit-and-Run Suspect Charged

Southold Town Police charge 23-year-old Greenport man with leaving the scene of an accident after he reportedly plowed into the side of a church Tuesday night.

Juan Carlos Flores-Campos, 23, of Greenport was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and unauthorized and unlicensed use of a motor vehicle at 11:43 p.m. Tuesday night, after he drove a 1999 Dodge pickup truck into the side of in Greenport and fled the scene, reported.

Officers on the scene found that the truck had gone partially into the basement of the church after striking a curb and plowing through a fence and bushes. Police said that Flores-Campos had fled the scene on foot and was located a few hours later.

After investigation, police said that they determined that Flores-Campos was the driver of the vehicle and that he did not have permission from his employer to use the truck at the time of the accident.

Police said that the village's building inspector determined that the church, though damaged, is structurally sound and the electricity was shut down.
