Police: Asphalt Truck Overturns After Hitting Car in Mattituck; Route 48 Closes to Traffic

Drivers are hospitalized as police and rescue crews work to clean up asphalt from an overturned dump truck at the intersection of Route 48 and Wickham Avenue in Mattituck on Friday.

The driver of a truck and the driver of a station wagon were hospitalized after their vehicles collided with each other at the intersection of Route 48 and Wickham Avenue in Mattituck at about 12:15 p.m. on Friday, reported.

The crash caused the truck to overturn onto its side, spilling asphalt all over the westbound lane of Route 48. As of 2 p.m. that westbound lane was still closed to traffic and will be for some time, police said.

Southold Town Police Detective Sgt. John Sinning said at the scene that members of the transported the male driver of the truck to and that members of the took the elderly female driver to for treatment. Authorities had no other details on the status of the victims at press time.
