Orient Fire Department Revives Old-Fashioned Pig Roast

Traditional BBQ will help fund fall open house and other community programs.

Remember the days of the annual pig roast held at a park off Village Lane in Orient a few years back?

Well, the this year, this time to be held on the grounds of the Orient Fire Department this coming Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. New fire department member Louis Yoh, a weekend Orient resident from Manhattan, rekindled the event with roasted pigs, beer and wine and a whole lot of extras all made with local produce.

“Basically everything and everyone involved is local, as is the band The Locals,” said Yoh. “We are hoping to bring together the community for a good old-fashioned pig roast to raise funds for the fire company.”

Robert Christiensen and Yoh will be roasting the pigs in cuban boxes for 400-plus people as well as making the homemade barbecue sauce. Claudia Helinski, owner of in Greenport is helping with a tomato salad which will be served over a bed of mesculin greens. Farmer Danny Latham is donating the corn on the cob, and Jeri Woodhouse of is contributing a chutney to go with the pig. There will be two types of beer, white and red wine, sodas and water. Local band The Locals are providing the day’s entertainment.

These funds will help pay for the annual Orient Fire Department’s fall open house and other community oriented programs for this year. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for kids under the age of 10. Tickets are available in Orient at the , , , and at in Jamesport.

Service will begin at 4 p.m. and continue until 8 p.m. Call the fire department at 631-323-2445 for more information.
