One Dead After Fire Rips Through Building in Mattituck

Fire destroys building on Main Road Friday night.

A 51-year-old man died inside of his apartment and four businesses were destroyed by a fire in the heart of Mattituck Friday night, officials said.

The blaze, which began at about 10:40 p.m., is believed to have ignited inside the apartment of the man who was killed and then quickly spread to the adjoining businesses at 12800 Main Road, near Love Lane, according to Southold Town Police.

Police said the Mattituck, Cutchogue, Southold, Greenport, East Marion and Jamesport fire departments were on the scene to extinguish the blaze, which caused the building to partially collapse, according to Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services.

The building destroyed had been the home of Liberty Data Systems and a few other small businesses.
