Greenport FD Makes 80 Gallons of Manhattan Clam Chowder

Get ready for some delicious red clam chowder, made from scratch at the Greenport Fire Department, after the Washington's Birthday parade on Saturday in the village.

Like you some clam chowder, Manhattan-style made with fresh local clams?

Swing by theafter the parade, which begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Chief Kenny White and several other volunteers spent hours Thursday night and Friday morning chopping up clam meat, onions and other fresh ingredients to make 80 gallons of the scrumptious and hearty concoction — a village tradition on Washington's Birthday for 166 years.

"I've only missed one of those years," laughed Chief White, who apparently knows the secret to eternal youth.

Bowls of the chowder are free and will be served to anyone who comes to the fire department, located at 311 Third Street in the village, after the parade. About 800 hot dogs will also be on hand for the kids.

None of the chowder ever goes to waste, Chief White added.
