Elderly Greenport Man Dies After Route 48 Car Crash

Two others involved in the crash were injured, police said.

An elderly Greenport man died and his wife was seriously injured in a crash on County Road 48 in Southold Saturday night.

Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene of the serious accident, which led to serious injuries for two others, on County Road 48 in Southold

According to Southold Town Police, Lawrence Damiani, 84, and his wife Janice, 83, were pulling out from Kennys Road onto County Road 48 when Damiani, who was driving, failed to yield the right of way to Muhammad Asjad, 33, of Riverhead, who was driving westbound on County Road 48. 

The vehicles collided, police said, Damiani and his wife were extricated from their vehicle by Southold Fire Department and airlifted by Suffolk Police helicopter to Stony Brook Hospital where Damiani died a short time later. Greenport rescue assisted by transporting Asjad to Eastern Long Island Hospital

Two Medevac helicopters landed at a staging area on Youngs Avenue and County Road 48, to transport the accident victims.

Traffic was backed up heading westbound as ambulances and police cars rushed to the scene.
