Driver Slams Into Mattituck Hess Sign, Gifts Unlimited Building

Police and fire departments respond to scene of accident at gas station Friday afternoon.

An unidentified driver was injuried after losing control of his car and slamming into the roadside price sign at the Mattituck Hess gas station at the corner of Route 25 and Bay Avenue shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Members of the Mattituck Fire Department and Southold Town Police responded to the scene. The impact tore the sign out of the concrete, and the driver dragged it across the parking lot before hitting the side of the Gifts Unlimited store located next to the gas station.

Hess employee Orcun Unsal said he was doing paperwork in the back of the mini mart when he heard the crash. He said that a few customers were getting gas at the time of the accident and that he believed no one else was injuried.

"It looks like we'll need some minor repairs but that's not important now — I hope he's ok," she said.
