Crimes Nearby: Non-Leathal Shootings Reported in Riverhead, East Hampton

The following information was supplied by various town police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

• Riverhead resident Thomas Anderson, 33, was allegedly shot by Suffolk County Corrections officer John Kwasna, 45, after Kwasna found the intruder in his Riverhead home early Saturday morning. According to Riverhead Town Police, they received a call at approximately 4:40 a.m. on Saturday morning from Kwasna, 45, of Old Farm Road in Riverhead, stating that he confronted a man in his home.

Kwasna, who was armed with a handgun, allegedly fired a shot as the individual ran towards him. Anderson was located by police a short distance from the scene with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was arrested by Riverhead Town Police and charged with burglary in the second degree. Police said Anderson was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center and subsequently, to Stony Brook University Medical Center, for treatment.

EAST HAMPTON

• A week after her son Frederic Stephens was shot, Tieya Bacon stood in front of East Hampton Town Justice Court, where Frank A. Hanna stood accused Thursday of shooting his friend with a 44-caliber pistol, to set the record straight: It was an accident. "Freddie came down the stairs and Frank pointed a gun at his head," Bacon said of the incident, which took place in the basement of 154 Springs Fireplace Road in East Hampton. "He told him to stop playing," Stephens' mother said. Hanna told him the safety was on as he lowered the gun, she said. But, it went off. A bullet struck Stephens in the arm and it went through to the side of his torso, she said.

• Kleber A. Sigcha, who was , took a plea deal in Suffolk County Criminal Court on Tuesday. Sigcha, a 33-year-old who was living in East Hampton, . Awaiting sentencing on June 29, he continues to be held at the Suffolk County jail in Riverside on $150,000 bond and $50,000 cash. There is a detainer from the Immigration Customs Enforcement Bureau for him, as well.

MILLER PLACE ROCKY POINT

• Christopher Small, 42, of Rocky Point, was arrested May 26 in Coram and charged with petty larceny and seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Small allegedly entered a white van illegally on Route 25A and Fife Drive in Coram and stole a 4-foot Magnum level and a wrench at approximately 3:48 p.m.

• Joshua Taub, 30, of Mt. Sinai, was arrested May 26 Mt. Sinai and charged with DWAI combined drugs and alcohol. Police said Taub was driving over the speed limit on Mount Sinai Road and crossed the doubl line into oncoming traffic at around 2:20 a.m.

• Daniel Hancock, 33, of Shoreham, was arrested May 24 in Mt. Sinai and charged with DWI with a previous conviction in the last 10 years. Police said he was driving a 2008 Jeep southbound on County Road 83 in Mt. Sinai at approximately 1:15 a.m. when he failed to maintain his lane of traffic.

WESTHAMPTON-HAMPTON BAYS

• On Wednesday at 9:22 p.m. Westhampton Beach Police charged Linda Jeanne Schwartz, 53 of Westhampton Beach, and charged her with DWI, a misdemeanor. Police say Schwartz was spotted driving erratically eastbound on Montauk Highway. Schwartz was held overnight and is due back in court on June 6.

• On Sunday at 3:13 a.m. police charged Michael Dove, 30 of Sayville, with DWI, a misdemeanor. Police say they pulled Dove over at the corner of Oak Street and Montauk Highway after he failed to maintain his lane and crossed over a double yellow line arrested. Dove was held overnight by Riverhead PD and is due to appear in court on June 13.

• Also on Sunday at 8:46 p.m. police charged Peter Gish, 50 of Sudbury, Mass., with reckless driving and DWI, a misdemeanor. Police say they pulled Gish over on Old Riverhead Road after they watched his passenger attempt to open the door of the car and exit while the car was in motion. Police say the driver didn’t attempt to slow the car. Gish was held on $300 bail and is due in court on June 30.

SOUTHAMPTON

• Tal A. Hadar, 28, of Woodbury, was arrested May 27 at 1:40 a.m. and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree, all felonies, and four counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree and criminally using drug paraphernalia in the second degree, all misdemeanors, as well as unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. Police said that at his arraignment Hadar was remanded to the Suffolk County Jail in lieu of $35,100 bail.

• Theresa Sasala, 26, of Southampton, was arrested May 21 at 8:14 p.m. and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, unlawful fleeing from a police officer, reckless driving and two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree, all misdemeanors, as well as unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.  Police said they attempted to stop Sasala while she was driving a 2000 Pontiac on West Prospect Street for a vehicle and traffic violation, but she refused to stop and led police on a pursuit back to her home on Fords Lane, where she fled on foot. She was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit, police said. The vehicle was impounded and at arraignment Sasala was remanded to the Suffolk County Jail in lieu of $16,250 bail.

• Naser Turkaj, 43, of East Quogue, was arrested May 15 at 11:15 a.m. and charged with criminal mischief in the third degree, a felony. Police said Turkaj committed multiple acts of vandalism to a property on Gin Lane over a period of more than three months. He was processed and released after posting $200 bail.
