Crime Report: Arrest in January Assault Case; DWI and Graffiti Charges

Southold Town Police report an arrest in a Greenport assault case from January, one incident of driving while intoxicated and another of making graffiti.

Maki T. Haynes was arrested on Tuesday at 2:19 p.m. and was charged with second degree felony assault in connection with an assault that occurred on Jan. 22 in Greenport, reported.

Investigation revealed that Haynes, 29, of Brookhaven, was one of the people allegedly involved in the beating of a male victim with a baseball bat, an incident which left the victim with several broken bones and brain swelling, police said. Haynes was arraigned Tuesday morning inand is being held on $10,000 cash bail. Police said that other arrests in connection with the case are anticipated.

Justin Grohoski, 24, of Cutchogue and Nicholas Sverlazza, 19, of Southold were charged with making graffiti on Wednesday at 11:28 p.m. in Greenport, after police received a report of several people spray painting graffiti on vehicles parked to the rear of businesses located on the eastern end of Front Street, police said. Officers at the scene discovered two large box vans had been vandalized with graffiti. After canvasing the area, officers located two suspects in a nearby parking lot, police said.

Christina Scarth, 41, of Southold was charged with driving while intoxicated on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., after police stopped her for failing to maintain her lane and for having an expired registration as she drove on South Harbor Road, police said.

None of the defendants have been convicted of a crime, but were charged with the above offenses. They are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
