Crime Report: Armed Robbery, DWI, False Impersonation

Southold Town Police charge Greenport man for armed robbery Tuesday night and report a case of false impersonation this week.

Greenport resident Vaughn Lawrence was charged with second-degree armed robbery on Tuesday at 9:49 p.m., after police responded to an incident that occurred on the grounds of , police said. Lawrence allegedly threatened a victim with a black handgun and demanded money and a wristwatch, and the victim then handed Lawrence $40 and  Freestyle brand diver's watch, police said. Lawrence was arraigned in and is being held on $2,500 bail.

Pedro Castro Mercado, 46, of Greenport was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and false impersonation on Thursday at 12:10 a.m., after police responded to a report of an intoxicated man walking along Route 25 in Southold. Officers on the scene found Castro Mercado lying on the ground with a cut on his forehead, police said. Members of the Rescue Squad responded but Castro Mercado refused medical attention and presented a fake social security card and a false Homeland Security permanent resident card to the officer at the scene, police said. Police also discovered that Castro Mercado had an active warrant from Ventura, Cali.

Michael Carrig, 43, of Greenport was charged with driving while intoxicated on Sunday at 10:17 a.m., after police stopped him for driving a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck with a suspended registration eastbound on Route 48 in Southold. Investigation revealed that Carrig's driver's license was also revoked and he failed several roadside sobriety tests, police said.

None of the defendants have been convicted of a crime, but were charged with the above offenses. They are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
