Cops: Woman Held Hostage in Mattituck; Man Held on $25K Bail

A woman was screaming for help and a suspect barricaded himself in the house, police said.

Police were on the scene of a hostage situation in Mattituck Monday night. 

According to Southold Town Police, a call came in at 9:09 p.m. regarding an incident on Pacific Street where a woman was heard screaming for help.

An officer was able to make contact with the woman and get her out of the home, while a suspect, Joel Jepson, 50, of Mattituck, retreated into the residence.

The woman told police Jepson had assaulted her  and held her against her will, police said.

According to Southold Police Chief Martin Flatley, the incident was a domestic disturbance that turned into a barricaded suspect in the house.

"There were no guns involved, no shots fired," he said. 

Police made contact with Jepson, but he refused orders from the officers to exit the home, police said.

Suffolk County's emergency services unit and hostage negotiation team responded and assisted Southold Town Police officers.

Jepson later exited the residence and was taken into custody. He was arrested and charged with unlawful imprisonment and harassment, misdemeanors.

He was transported to Southold police headquaters, processed, and held overnight pending arraignment.

According to Southold Town Justice Court, Jepson was held on $25,000 cash bail, and $50,000 bond.
