Cops To Set Up Seat Belt Checkpoints In Southold

Motorists are urged to buckle up; Southold police will set up checkpoints to ensure seat belts are being used on the road.

Buckle up -- or pay the piper.

The Southold Town police department announced Thursday that, with an eye toward increased public safety, it will be participating in the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee's "Buckle Up New York, Click it or Ticket" campaign.

The campaign runs from May 20 through June 2.

During that time period, officers, funded by a New York State Traffic Safety grant, will be conducting high visibility, zero tolerance checkpoints throughout town to enforce and draw attention to the use of seat belts amongst motorists and passengers.

Through the efforts of these seat belt enforcement waves New York has reached its highest-ever seat belt use rate of over 90 percent, police said.
