Cops: Three-Way Car Accident Leads to Arrest

One driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

A Shelter Island man was arrested after a car accident in Greenport on Sunday.
 
According to Southold Town police, the accident took place at 10:59 a.m. Sunday at the traffic light at the intersection of Front and Third Streets in Greenport.

Police said two drivers were stopped at the light, heading east, when a third driver rear-ended one car, causing it to hit the car in front.

An investigation revealed that the driver who hit the first car may have been under the influence of prescription drugs, police said; Maury Laspia, 58, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and taken to Southold police headquarters, where he was processed and held awaiting arraignment.

One driver complained of neck pain and was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment.
