Officers said they found the man hiding under the stairs of the home he'd been forced to leave.

A Greenport man who was evicted from his home on Thursday refused to leave.

Southold Town police said a 43-year-old Greenport man was arrested and charged with criminal trespass in the second degree, a misdemeanor, after he tried to break into his old home.

According to police, on Wednesday at 11:19 p.m. officers responded to a home on 5th Avenue in the village, after a man reported to have been evicted that day by the sheriff's department attempted to break into the dwelling through a second story window.

At the scene, officers entered the building and located the man inside, hiding underneath a stairwell inside, police said.

The defendant was arrested, transported to police headquarters for processing, and held for arraignment in the morning.
