A man was arrested and charged with the rape of a girl, 12, in Greenport on Saturday, police said.

According to Southold Town police Erick W. Ramirez, 20, was arrested on Saturday after an investigation revealed that he engaged in sexual intercourse with the girl.

He was arrested and charged with rape in the first degree, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a felony.

Ramirez, an illegal immigrant, was arrested and taken to Southold Town police headquarters, where he was processed and held overnight for arraignment Sunday before Justice William Price.

Bail was set at $250,000.

Ramirez was then transported to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. A Department of Homeland Security immigration detainer was also placed on Ramirez for being an illegal alien, police said.

Forward thinker, you are most definitely going in reverse... To, even sarcastically, imply that Ms McCarthy is abetting a crime because she teaches her children to love others regardless of their origin is ignorant and disrespectful. What happened to this girl is a tragedy. Her innocence was stolen. To start a police story about such a horrible occurrence with the title "illegal alien" takes the focus away from the real story at hand and turns it into a political debate about something irrelevant. Rapists come in all shapes, sizes and ethnic origins. Let's not sharpen our pitchforks and head to the town square to boycott a group of people all trying to do the same thing our grandparents did... Instead, let's focus on sending positive thoughts and prayers to this girl and her family, teach our children about what they can talk to us about, and what we can do to help our community heal.

Note: they changed the title of the article, so us bed-wetting (I stay dry all night all have you know) liberals aren't the only ones who found this insensitive to the incident at hand.

Hope this young girl can recover from this terrible ordeal...God give her family strength and wisdom...If found guilty, then this scumbag illegal alien should pay the price..period...
John Wevers January 26, 2014 at 10:33 PM
Thanks for the definitions: illegal and alien. People have come here for generations to make money and send it home. The difference is this crop of foreigners are leaches sucking the life out of our social systems, making anchor babies where they use their EBT cards before they take our their wads of cash to buy things to put into the SUV's. Yes, there are the ones with the run down compact cars with South Carolina plates and no license or insurance. Check out the jails and see how many of them are committing crimes and then learn that the Chosen One's ICE agents take them into NYC and let them go only to show up back in jail. And then we spend billions printing everything in two languages! Enough of my rant. Just think of that poor little girl!
Concerned January 27, 2014 at 08:11 AM
Please find out who employed the illegal immigrant as the deserve to be boycotted at a minimum.
John January 27, 2014 at 08:12 AM
At the time of the ICE raids in Greenport, Mayor David Nyce to show his unhappiness with the local authorities for not keeping him in the loop, and to pander to a small group of residents who thought the raids were heavy handed, declared Greenport a "Sanctuary City". (from Wikipedia,The term generally applies to cities that do not allow municipal funds or resources to be used to enforce federal immigration laws, usually by not allowing police or municipal employees to inquire about one's immigration status). The movie line from Field of Dreams, If you build it, they will come, would appear to apply to more than just baseball.

positive thinking - not all lib's are pinko bed wetting in fact there are pinko bed wetting conserve.'s ... my post reflected how a serious crime was spun away from the crime to defining status. much like having sex and defining "I did not have sex"... a crime was committed by a existing criminal and we allow illegals to exist which is also a crime.. a quality criminalist starts at the source and eliminates it so the crime does not have the medium to occur.
forward thinking January 27, 2014 at 08:59 AM
My prayers and support go out to the girl and her family, as should all of us...
Scott January 27, 2014 at 12:50 PM
Liberals always have things backwards, it's time for ICE to come out of the shadows, where the heck are they? We are more likely to spot Big Foot.

I started a discussion about the Patch using wording I found disturbing. I began with how sad for a 12yr old and that he should be punished. It turned into some name calling and the usual hatred towards immigrants in general came out. This crime should be hated not all immigrants. I still believe we should treat all with respect no matter. Thank you Patch for changing the wording. I must say that I myself was gang raped at 13yrs old. They were white neighborhood teens. I was too ashamed to tell anyone 53yrs ago. They grew to become well respected business men. I entered troubled teen and young adult years. I paid the price for the crime. I hope this young girl gets more attention than anyone. She will need love and respect from all.
forward thinking January 27, 2014 at 04:42 PM
my last word on this subject - first - I can't know what you experienced and can only say those trouble teens were feeling today the anguish you felt... however you missed my points -- ILLEGAL was the missing term from your last post and to that we all are allowing a criminal (s) to exist...some whites commit crimes - some immigrants commit crimes BUT all ILLEGALS are criminals....
Eileen McCarthy January 27, 2014 at 04:59 PM
I did understand your observation about this man is a criminal, that all illegals are criminals. Not wanting to get into more I said nothing. So many situations in our lives involve criminals. All of us know people who in some way break the law. Many crimes are accepted and many are not. I cringe when 'respected' boys get away with rape while the town goes after the girl. Some use drugs and we do nothing. My point is many of us concentrate on 'illegals' and ignore the other 'criminals' on the opposite side of the street.
Frank T January 27, 2014 at 05:09 PM
Eileen you are twisting your words. Most people do not "hate" legal immigrants. You cannot call an illegal alien an immigrant since they are living here illegally and making life difficult for the hard working individuals who are legally working thru the system to become a citizen. Mixing the 2 words is very deceptive and intentionally misleading.
Scott January 27, 2014 at 05:16 PM
Eileen, We understand your compassion, perhaps if there weren't an estimated 25 million of them here perhaps people wouldn't be so angry about them.
mike edelson January 27, 2014 at 06:40 PM
After castration he should be deported - to the nuclear power plant in Japan.
chris January 28, 2014 at 07:01 AM
THANKS eileen thanks for respect the all Latinos, I do not defend this person think should pay for what he did and be deported because for people like that paid many Latino who are decent and work hard and to all who are racist remember that many cut their grass, paint your home, we harvest the vegetables they eat is so please do not ask you to respect this guy but if the Latino community that we are not all equal. god bless your family elly, and all that offend people without knowing them
tom bearin January 28, 2014 at 08:36 AM
all you people are part of the problem who is cutting your lawn who is serving you food who is roofing your house if we all made sure we only hired citizens all these low life's would move on
tom bearin January 28, 2014 at 08:38 AM
by the way there is a big difference between immigrants and ILLEGAL people who do not pay taxes and leach off of the system please go to the dictionary and look up ILLEGAL
Diana Gordon January 28, 2014 at 08:52 AM
Chris makes an important point. The rush to condemn one person for a terrible offense should not include the condemnation of all Latinos who have migrated to the North Fork to work and, in many cases, to raise families in an environment safer and more stable than they can find in their own countries. Greenport would not be the vibrant, successful community it is today without the contributions of Latino immigrants. As for the accused man, Erick Ramirez was a troubled boy from the moment he arrived, at 17, to join his mother. Had economic and political conditions in Guatemala not been so dire, his family would not have been separated and disrupted in ways that surely have contributed to the crime he is alleged to have committed.
Concerned January 28, 2014 at 09:50 AM
The point is being missed. When a person enters the USA illegally they put our citizens at risk. We are denied the chance to verify their health status, criminal record etc. Did this illegal immigrant have any criminal record from his home country? As a rapist and pedophile does he have history of this violent behavior? Usually they do as it is a mental disorder. Immigrants must follow our immigration laws and our federal government must enforce those laws. My Grandmother in 1912 spent time on Ellis Island for a health check, references were checked and she had to have a letter of her employment here in the US. Our neighbor in the north, Canada, to this day will not even allow you to visit. Their country if you were convicted of a felony. So if you have been convicted of a DWI you cannot visit or move to Canada.
Frank T January 28, 2014 at 09:54 AM
Here we go again, it's not the criminals fault its society. We managed to survive and overcome that drivel in the late 80's in Manhattan thanks to Guiliani and Bloomberg and their crackdown on crime. There are many who suffered during childhood and have not become criminals. There are no excuses a crime is a crime and the perp should be locked up and not allowed prey on innocent citizens.
Frank T January 28, 2014 at 10:53 AM
Diana, Greenport would not be the vibrant, successful community it is today without the contribution of tourist dollars. Illegal aliens have contributed to the drug and crime increase in Greenport.
chris January 28, 2014 at 06:36 PM
my dear, FRANK maybe you're right about the tourists, and perhaps about the increase in crime but only you tell me who are the people who sell drugs in greenport? are undocumented?, are legal Americans, please do not try to hide a problem that always existed and blame Latinos for all the things that maybe the same legal Americans caused, again, do not try to excuse this person he must pay for what he did

I know of this guy. He was someone I totally stayed away from. When I think of him the words that comes to mind is calculating predator. He was always drunk and high and he was he was kicked out of school. He had a history of groping and forcibly kissing girls when he got drunk or high at parties. He does have a prior criminal record. He's not an angel who was abused by mommy or Guatemala or circumstances. He is nothing but a psychopath that finally was caught. I know he took money from people who tried to help him, he lied, he stole, was involved in criminal activities and flew under the radar for years. I think the people of the East End were very lucky he was finally caught. Too bad it was at the expense of the little girl. In another article, they talked about him being a soccer star. He was. Go to YouTube. But he is not a general example of what Hispanics are like on the East End. If you talk to anyone who knew this guy, not one of them will say he was a great guy. They will say he was in trouble, had a substance abuse problem, he was violent and a lot people were afraid of his behavior and didn't want him around. Why no one turned him in I don't know. It could have been fear of retaliation or that people didn't care or didn't want to get involved. But they should have. It could have saved the little girl and the other women he assaulted a lot of fear and sadness. I think a lot people can rest easy knowing this guy is behind bars.
William Swiskey sr January 28, 2014 at 11:08 PM
If the above comment about him being a problem in school is true. Someone in authority in Greenport School has a lot of explaining to do. How do you let a person with these problems even near young children on school property. I think the school administration owes the public a full explanation or resignations are in order and an outside investigation.
chris January 29, 2014 at 03:10 AM
you're right william I do not understand how the school let him be the assistant coach of the girls soccer team, the school has much to explain
