Cops: Elderly Man Runs Red Light, Causes Cutchogue Crash

Two men were taken to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries, police said.

Two men were taken to the hospital after a car accident caused by an elderly Shelter Island man who ran a red light in Cutchogue, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the accident took place on Route 48 and Cox lane on Monday at 2:05 p.m..

Police said a Peconic man, 21, was driving southbound on Cox Lane and had a green light; the Shelter Island man, 74, was driving eastbound when he ran a red light and hit the other car.

The driver who caused the accident was issued a ticket for a violation, police said.

Cutchogue Rescue responded and took the Shelter Island man to Peconic Bay Medical Center and the Peconic driver to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
