Cops: Drunk Woman Texted, Crashed Car

The driver hit two trees and four mailboxes, police said.

A Southold woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after police said she was texting and crashed her car into two trees and four mailboxes in the early hours of New Year's Day in Southold.

According to Southold Town police, Cristina Maria Madison, 21, was arrested at 12:56 a.m. on Main Bayview Road and Williamsburg Drive.

Police said Madison was driving a 2004 Volvo southbound on Main Bavyiew Road, when the vehicle ran off the road, due to the fact that Madison was texting while driving. The vehicle struck four mailboxes and two large trees, police said.

Further investigation at the scene revealed that Madison was intoxicated, police said. Madison was arrested and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital by Southold Fire Department personnel.

She was charged with DWI, a misdemeanor.

She was later discharged from ELIH and transported to Southold Town Police headquarters where she processed and held overnight to await arraignment in Southold Town Justice Court.
