Cop Hospitalized Following Arrest Struggle

Police said that after fleeing police, a Peconic man now faces felony assault charges after a policeman was sent to the hospital.

A Southold policeman was hospitalized on Friday morning after arresting a Peconic man, who now faces felony assault charges after Friday's incident.

Officer Brian McNamara was assisting Riverhead P.D. on Friday morning, attempting to arrest 36-year-old Alfredo Chitay on criminal contempt, harassment and criminal trespass charges following a domestic dispute, Southold Police said.

While attempting to arrest Chitay, police said, the man fled and cops were forced to use physical force on the man. During the altercation, McNamara suffered a deep laceration to his right knee, police said.

No weapons were used in the struggle, according to police.

McNamara was hospitalized at Eastern Long Island Hospital and released later on Friday.

According to police, Chitay was transported to Riverhead to face his outstanding charges, and will be due back in court in Southold on felony charges of second-degree assault, as well as a misdemeanor resisting arrest charge.
