Talk Back Poll: Do You Support the School Budget for 2012-13?

The vote for the Lindenhurst School Budget for 2012-13 is less than two weeks away on May 15. Are you for or against this year's proposed budget?

Residents will be able to cast their ballots for or against the in less than two weeks, on , .

The $141.7 million proposed and approved by the Board of Education has an associated 2.45 percent tax-levy increase.

That 2.45 percent tax-levy increase is less than the 3.55 percent the district was allowed under New York state law, but above what the residents here in Lindenhurst think it should be.

In last week's Talk Back Poll 60 percent said they weren't happy with the 2.45 percent increase because it should've been less than the two-percent tax cap originally passed by New York State last year.

The poll sparked a discussion about whether or not residents support this year's budget, and how they'll vote on May 15. The majority on the comment thread said they'd vote "no."

Residents also brought up the on-going teacher contract talks. Many felt it was time for teachers to give back while others defended teachers and TAL (teachers' union).

(To join the discussion and see the results of that poll, click . To read what TAL President Rose Russo said about contract talks, click .)

So now with the vote nearing, the question now becomes:

  • Do you support budget?

How can anyone in their right mind support any budget proposed when the teachers wont give back anything. We are in a recession and people are losing their homes and the only thing the board can say about the budget is its only 500.00 or 600.00 more. I say vote down the budget and the board that's up for re-election. It's a start

It has been said that much of the budget increase is the result of loss of state aid. I have posted this question on a few sites and have never seen an answer. Years ago when the NYS Lottery was proposed the proceds were to go to educaton, now anyone who visits any of the local convenance stores knows that the lines to gamble ones money away are always long. The question is were is this money going, it's sure not to LI Schools.

Highly opposed. Unlike many other school districts on Long Island, the unions have refused any concessions. While our district staff continue to receive substantial increases in wages and benefits, services to our children are being decimated.
