New York City Homeless Advocate Dies in Greenport at Age 85

New York Times reports on death of Anna Lou Dehavenon, a woman with family ties to Greenport and a noted authority on New York City homelessness and poverty.

After her husband, pianist William Kapell, died in a plane crash in 1953, Anna Lou Dehavenon was left alone with two children, little money, and no college degree. That harrowing experience lead her to pursue a Ph.D in anthropology and become one of the foremost authorities on poverty, hunger and homelessness in New York City.

Dr. Dehavenon died at the age of 85 in Greenport on Tuesday, her son David Kapell told the New York Times this week. Read the full story from the New York Times here.
