Blogger: The North Fork is Open for the Holiday Weekend

Even in the aftermath of Irene, North Fork wineries, restaurants and visitor destinations have had their power restored as well as their enthusiasm. They are geared up for Labor Day weekend.

It is an understatement to refer to the North Fork as shaken or uprooted after Irene hit last weekend. Not only could you lose count of the number of tremendous old trees toppled onto power lines along Route 25 as well as Sound Avenue but the extensive power outages seemed to disrupt the way of life on the East End more than anything else.

Friends, family and co-workers of mine spent almost the entire week without electricity, cable and even running water (for those of you with well water). A few that reside in the Jamesport and Southold areas, on the beach, still remain without power.

It seems as if there is a buzz around the Fork whispering about the "big weekend" being predicted as a disappointment already. Business owners are concerned that the news of apparent damage and outages will keep visitors away and holiday tourism at an all-time low.

Well, I'm writing to tell all of you that the North Fork is open for business and will be filled with memorable entertainment for the upcoming Labor Day weekend. Vineyards are celebrating the fact that no damage was sustained, even given those strong winds from Irene, and they want guests to join them! Power has been restored and specials are being offered for the holiday along with live music and special events in tasting rooms throughout Long Island Wine Country. Some are even extending their hours to give travelers a longer day among the vines.

Restaurants are looking forward to seeing you too. They are gearing up for the busy extended weekend as planned and will feature exciting menus and even live music. Greenport Village is already bustling with the absolutely gorgeous weather that appeared in the wake of the storm.

I'm positive that so many Long Islanders are experiencing the always-dreaded cabin fever after stocking their homes and barricading themselves inside, glued to the forecasts of impending mayhem from this tropical nightmare. Now, one week later, the North Fork is offering everyone a chance to come out and enjoy the drier, sunny weather. Join us at the most picturesque vineyards to savor summer as it comes to a close, dine with us on artfully unique local dishes and shop along the quaint sidewalks of the seaside villages. Visit the North Fork this Labor Day and the aftermath of Irene will seem light years away.
