Blogger: Fall's True Colors Come Shining Through

All that red and yellow and crimson isn't what it seems.

Fall has always been my favorite season. It is hard to argue with the crackle of leaves underfoot or sunrise glistening diamond bright on hoarfrost. The smell of woodsmoke drifts on the evening air (though my allergies have begun to mess with enjoying that in recent years).  And then I learned something astonishing. As stereotypes have it, those spectacular leaves overhead appear to be dying in a wild burst of color. But in fact, all of those vibrant reds and yellows and oranges were really there all along. Those are the natural color of the leaf. It’s just that, with all that summer green, we couldn’t see it. Only in the autumn of a leaf’s life, when the chlorophyll is no longer being produced, can those true colors come shining through. Gloriously liberated. Going out in a blaze of luminous and unselfconscious beauty.

Hope, I’ve always felt for all of us.
