Teens Raise $1000 For Maureen's Haven

Mattituck teens put their hearts into a project to raise money for those less fortunate.

Simple empty bowls packed a powerful message in Mattituck recently.

The Mattituck High School's Art Partner club raised $1000 for Maureen's Haven, a homeless outreach program, recently.

The Mattituck Junior-Senior High School participated in the internationally renowned Empty Bowls Project to raise the funds. Students, teachers and community members created ceramic bowls under the direction of Mattituck art teachers.

Participants created ceramic bowls, and a simple supper of soup and bread was planned. Guests gave a suggested minimum donation of $10 and choose a bowl to keep as a reminder of the bowl they have helped to fill.

"What a wonderful group of young people," Tracey Lutz, executive director of the Maureen's Haven homeless outreach program, said. "I am always thrilled when our kids embrace charitable endeavors for people in need in our community."

All proceeds benefit hunger-fighting organizations.
