Howard Thompson of WPKN, New Suffolk and London

The man introduces himself:

Howard Thompson moved from London to the North Fork (New Suffolk) about 9 years ago having spent 30 years in the music business. Starting out as the tea-boy at Trident Studios, London, he worked his way up the ladder of the studio system (assistant engineer, editor/copyist, disc-cutting engineer) before figuring out that what he really wanted to be was an a&r person, someone who discovers, nurtures, develops and signs new artists to a record company. Stints at Island Records, Bronze Records and CBS Records led to a transfer to Columbia Records in America and it wasn't long before he became the Head Of A&R at Elektra Records. 9 years later, Herb Alpert & Jerry Moss asked him to help form a new label - Almo Sounds - and after 6 more years of incessant clubbing, traveling and listening to yet more (mostly dodgy) demo-tapes, he thought perhaps it was time to try something else. He tried his hand at management and took one of them scurvy rock & roll bands around the world a few times seeing life in the music biz from the other side of the desk and decided he didn't like it.

Howard currently does what he started doing in 1960 - playing records for the sheer pleasure of it, only now he does it at WPKN, 89.5FM (Bridgeport) instead of in his bedroom. Life is good.  Tune in to Howard's show "Pure" on the 1st & 3rd Friday of the month, 4pm-7pm.
