Julia Daisy Cardi might only be a little girl, just seven years old, but she's already got one of the biggest hearts around.

Julia, who lives in Southold and is in first grade at Southold Elementary School, decided all on her own that she wanted to donate her long hair after seeing commercials on television for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where other kids her own age were battling cancer, her mom, Jen Cardi said.

Julia decided to donate her hair to Locks of Love, a public, non-profit organization that, according to their website, "provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis."

"She was so happy she did it and wanted it sent before Christmas," Cardi said. "She has a heart of gold."

Of her new short hair style, which was cut by Tonya McDowell, who cut Cardi's older daughter's hair years before, her mom said, "She loves it and loves the new style."

Reflecting on her daughter's decision to give back, Cardi said, "I love, love, love it — and I love that it was all her idea."
