Will Riverhead, the North Fork See a White Christmas?

Find out what the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration has to say.

Will it snow on Christmas?

Joey Pica, meteorologist with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration said with Christmas still a week away it is hard to say.

"Usually a forecast at that range is very variable," he said.

However, judging on the current weather pattern, which calls for rain on Saturday and Sunday and dry out by Monday, it isn't likely there will be snow on Christmas.

"There is always that possibility of course, but the answer is probably and even likely, no," he said, noting that meteorologists are watching a storm system that is moving toward the East End and Long Island from the west.

That system, he said has the potential to produce snow, but said that it is still unclear when and if it will hit.

"The timing could be after Christmas," he said.

A day after Christmas in 2010, Long Island was hit with a that left holiday travelers stranded and homeowners digging out for days.

For the Northeast this winter, the Farmer's Almanac predicts snow between Dec. 24 and the 27th, but not a major storm until around Feb. 12.
