Opinion: Listen to the Sound of Silence ... Hopefully

Peconic women wants helicopter noise to go away once and for all.

We on the North Fork are only seeking the sounds of silence.

It would appear that there are levels of influence when it comes to deciding the appropriate route for helicopters flying well-heeled passengers to their South Fork lairs. The offices of the powerful have proven to be unable to make a resolution in this noisy matter, including Tim Bishop, Steve Levy and even Charles Schumer.

All of the pleading, screaming and petition signing do not seem to be moving our legislators to affect any changes.  The static belief that the most direct route is not the most desirable route is controlling the prevailing FAA ruling.  It is well known by anyone owning a map of the East End that water is everywhere. It may seem silly, but simply, planes and helicopters disturb no one when flying over the ocean.  It is puzzling that a simple solution is not as evident to all of the “experts” who are weighing in on this perturbing subject.  Understanding that the airspace over Kennedy Airport must be avoided, there are very few who would be unable to take a pencil and draw a line between the heliports and their final East Hampton destinations without encroaching on the bucolic North Fork.

It is fruitless to reiterate the frustrations that homeowners on the North Fork experience as they attempt to enjoy their once peaceful afternoons. While attempting to soak up the ambience, sounds of war break out on a regular schedule as residents are battered with the throbbing sound of rotors that are always too close. Frustration will not be assuaged, as once again financial interests always succeed.

Promises have been made, always just before election season, to make a permanent change in the flight paths.  Sadly, the battle lines are well delineated and the air “force” will soon be taking to the skies.  The best recommendation is to have a supply of earplugs at the ready along with an iPad which will allow conversation when the guests have arrived.
