North Fork Beaches in Good Shape and Ready for Sunbathers

Local beaches are open for the long weekend, many with lifeguards.

Southold Town and local park district officials are reporting that most local beaches along both Peconic Bay and the Long Island Sound are in great shape after and will be open for visitors over Labor Day weekend.

, recently rebuilt after during severe storms this past winter, will be open with lifeguards stationed, as will beach in Greenport. Every other town beach will also be open to the public but will not have lifeguards stationed, according to the Town Clerk’s office.

“We had severe damage from trees at Founders, “ said Southold Park District secretary Sandra Kollen.  “But we’re ready for the weekend.”

Visitors can also stop by and park in Southold, she added.

In Mattituck, on the bay and on the Sound will also have lifeguards stationed, said Doris McGreevy of the . , a narrower strip of beach than most on the North Fork, is more prone to erosion damage from storms but weathered Irene well, McGreevy said.

“Hurricanes usually are not too devastating — it’s the Nor’Easters we need to watch out for,” she said of those on the bluffs near Bailie. “But other than trees falling and losing power, we were alright and we’ll be there for Labor Day.”
