Heavy Rain and Winds, Ponding Headed To North Fork

Drainages could become blocked due to piles of snow that still exist, officials said Tuesday morning.

Heavy rain and high winds Tuesday night could lead to a rough commute Wednesday morning, according to reports from the National Weather Service.

According to Tim Morrin, meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Upton, clouds are expected to increase Tuesday afternoon, with rain moving in from the west and developing between 9 and 10 p.m.

"Once it reaches the East End and starts to rain overnight, rain will be quite heavy at times and through the morning rush hour," Morrin said.

Rain is expected to dissipate Wednesday at around lunchtime, he said, with a total accumulation of an inch or an inch and a quarter of rain.

"We don't expect any snow or ice," he said. "Just rain."

Although major coastal flooding is not expected on the North Fork, Morrin said drainage issues on roadways, and at intersections and traffic circles, could prove problematic, especially with the large piles of snow that still exist in some areas.

Extensive ponding can be expected on some area roadways, intersections and traffic circles, he said.

High winds of up to 40 miles per hour are expected on the North Fork, with gusts up to 50 miles an hour possible on the South Fork, Morrin said.

Temperatures are expected to remain steady in the upper 30s and remain close to 40 degrees, he said.

Morrin said the heavy rainfall and its timing into the rush hour could make for a messy ride to work Wednesday morning. "Residents should prepare for a slower than normal rush hour," he said.
