Greenport Mayor: 'We're Holding Our Breath for Storm Surge'

Village made it through Saturday night with minimal damage — now residents brace for storm surge.

Hurricane Irene did minimal damage to over Saturday night, says village Mayor David Nyce.

As of about 9 a.m., only one section of town is without power near , Nyce said.

The village took in about three or four inches of rain, he added, thus minimizing flooding overnight but residents are still waiting a storm surge from the tail end of Irene as she passes through at high tide around 10:30 a.m.

“We’re holding our breath on the surge at super high tide,” Nyce said. “The ground water is high so we could see a lot of flooding still — we just need to get through the next couple hours then we’ll be seeing the downside of this. We’ve been lucky so far.”
