Enrollment Down in North Fork Schools

Though area schools also show a jump in Hispanic enrollment in the latest New York State School Report Card.

A state report released Thursday shows enrollment sliding in the, the and the .

According to the The New York State School Report Card for 2009-2010, enrollment in Mattituck, a K-12 District, dropped to 1,514 in 2010, compared to 1,614 students in the 2007-2008 school year and 1,581 in the 2004-2005 school year.

Though the slide hasn't had too big of an impact on class sizes. In 2009-2010, the average class size was 20 students, down from 21 two years earlier.

As for district demographics, there has been little shift in school ethnicity. In 2009-2010, 92 percent of the student body was white, 4 percent was Hispanic, 3 percent black and 1 percent Asian, a ratio that's held for 3 years.

Though troubles in the economy have pushed the percentage of students getting free or discounted lunches to 12 percent, compared to 8 percent in 2007-2008.

The same trend can be seen in Southold and Greenport.

Southold's enrollment slid to 926 students last year, compared to 956 in 2007-2008 and 1,012 in 2004-2005. Greenport's fell to 605 students last year, compared to 637 in 2007-2008 and 679 in 2004-2005.

Class sizes in Southold fell to 19 from 21 two years earlier, while Greenport's fell to 18 compared to 19.

Southold's Hispanic student body, however, inched up to 9 percent in 2009-2010, compared to 7 percent in 2007-2008. The white population at the school is 88 percent, Asian 2 percent and black 1 percent.

And 10 percent of the student body is eligible for free or discounted lunch.

That number balloons in Greenport, where 36 percent of the student body gets free lunch, and another 8 percent get a discounted lunch.

In that district, the Hispanic population has reached 30 percent, compared to 25 percent in 2007-2008. Whites made up 54 percent of students in 2009-2010, while blacks made up 12 percent.
