To Bedell winemaker Richard Olsen-Harbich, Zraly is probably the most preeminent wine educators in the U.S.

"In our lifetime, he is clearly the most recognized," he said. "He has a very casual style of communicating. He demystified wine and made it accessible to the general public, and we're very glad he's coming here."

Hundreds of people have taken classes from Zraly over the years, and several local winemakers would hold annual tastings called "Windows on Long Island" at the restaurant when the World Trade Center was still standing.

Zraly's books written out of the experience of teaching at Windows on the World are still read and referenced to by sommeliers. This year, Zraly was honored by the James Beard Foundation with a Lifetime Achievement Award. A Q&A and book signing will follow Zraly's lecture at Bedell.

The event is free and open to the public. Contact Molly Deegan at molly@bedellcellars.com or by calling 631-734-7537 to RSVP.
