Dolphin Swimming Around Shelter Island Found Dead in East Hampton

Marine reseach team reports death of stranded common dolphin.

A common dolphin was found dead on Cedar Point in East Hampton on Tuesday after it had been swimming over the weekend in Shelter Island's West Neck Bay, according to a report in the Riverhead News Review.

A team from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation had been monitoring the dolphin after it had been spotted on Sunday. Julika Wocial, head of the foundation, said that the dolphin did not appear to be in distress but that the team remained with the animal for over six hours due to concerns that it might beach itself in the shallows. By late Sunday night, the dolphin was swimming in deeper waters and the team speculated that it had moved out to sea.

The foundation is continuing its investigation. Read the full report on the Riverhead News-Review.
