Cross Sound Ferry Runner On Boston Explosions: 'It's Chaotic'

Stan Mickus reportedly finished the race well before the blasts.

As three explosions after the Boston Marathon left at least two dead and dozens injured, the North Fork community sought answers about whether their friends and loved ones were safe.

For many, after the blasts, thoughts turned immediately to Stanley Mickus, director of public affairs and marketing at the Cross Sound Ferry. Mickus, an avid runner, headed north with his family for the marathon this week.

"We're fine," Mickus said after the race, adding that he had already returned back to his hotel by the time of the explosions.

"It's chaotic," he added. "It's completely chaotic. I've never been a part of something like this before -- it's so tragic. It's horrible."

Mickus and his family are staying in a hotel only a half mile from the finish line where the blasts occurred; hotel staff is going from table to table at the restaurant with a master list to ensure all guests are accounted for. Mickus and his family planned to stay put at the hotel Monday night.

The Boston Marathon is a tradition for Mickus. "I've done this race six times," he said. "It's usually a pretty positive day. To have something like this happen . . . "

Mickus noted that the explosions happened on a Massachusetts, Patriot's Day, something he said is symbolic.

Since the tragedy, Mickus said his phone has been ringing non-stop as concerned relatives and friends check in. "We're fine. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone else and the other runners. We hope everyone is safe and accounted for."

Cross Sound Ferry staff confirmed after the explosions that Mickus was fine. He finished the race well before the explosions rocked Boylston Street.

And, on his Facebook page, friends and family rejoiced in the good news. "Happy to hear you're safe," one friend wrote.

"Thank God you're okay," another wrote. "Love you."
