Cops: Men Charged With Stealing Verizon Feeder Cable, Heroin Possession in Orient

One man was charged with heroin possession, police said.

Two men were arrested after police said they were found trying to steal Verizon feeder cable -- one in possession of heroin -- in Orient.

According to Southold Town police, authorities received a call from Plum Island security at 4 p.m. on Wednesday that the suspects were trespassing on county parkland in Orient and were allegedly removing several lengths of Verizon feeder cable from the location.

Police said Bert Roner, 35, of South Jamesport, was located driving away from the scene under the influence of a controlled substance and was charged with driving while impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor.

His passenger, Nicholas Latasso, 33, of Riverhead, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a misdemeanor; the substance field tested positive for heroin, police said.

Both men were charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree and criminal trespassing in the third degree, misdemeanors.

The two men were arrested and held for arraignment. Suffolk County Parks police were also notified and responded, police said.
