Town Supervisor Proposes Mattituck Village Green

Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell presented his initial ideas to the Mattituck Chamber of Commerce for the creation of a village green near Love Lane in Mattituck.

Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell wants to convert the awkward one-way section of Sound Avenue by Love Lane in Mattituck into a village green and is budgeting $500,000 for next year to do it.

He presented research he and Town Board members have been compiling for the project as part of a Mattituck business corridor study to members of the Mattituck Chamber of Commerce on Monday at the Elbow Room in Jamesport.

Mattituck, he said, is the only hamlet on the North Fork lacking a centralized village green.

"Mattituck has no village green," Russell said. "Mattituck has a McDonald's."

The supervisor said that with the village green and a traffic circle at the intersection of Love Lane and Route 25, he hopes to redirect business focus in the hamlet center away from franchises to local business owners. He also cited the unused gravel area north of the Mattituck train station off of Pike Street as one of many problems with the Town's master plan.

"It's a new day, we need to create new zoning," Russell said. "This is a very difficult area to navigate. We want to create a friendly hamlet center."

The Town Board meets Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Brecknock Hall in Greenport. The next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at a location in Mattituck to continue the discussion on the village green with residents it will affect the most, Russell said.
