State-Funded Dredging Will Keep South Ferry Operational

$750,000 will go to a dredging company.

The areas around South Ferry's slips on North Haven and Shelter Island are in need of dredging — especially since Superstorm Sandy hit the East End — and now, thanks to a state grant, the work will get done, according to The Shelter Island Reporter.

New York State Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle announced earlier this month that South Ferry will receive $750,000 in New York State Transportation Department Multimodal funds to resolve docking and navigational issues; however, The Reporter states that the money, along with Suffolk County funds, will go to a dredging company.

“The ferries and their continuous, unimpeded operation are critically important for the residents of Shelter Island as well as for visitors and the Island’s economy,” LaValle said.
