Soundview Ready for Halloween Costumes – and the End of the World

Greenport restaurant ready to see some incredible Halloween costumes at contest this month and plan a 'Dance the World Away' party for Dec. 21.

Soundview Restaurant owner Rachel Murphy is known for throwing one of the best Halloween parties around — the annual costume contest held on the Saturday night before Halloween at her popular Greenport gathering place on the Long Island Sound.

But this year, she’s also ready to do it up for Thanksgiving Festivus and even Dec. 21 —  the so-called last day of the world, according to some who’ve interpreted the Mayan calendar that way — with a “Dance the World Away” party.

“We’re doing a trilogy this year,” Murphy said. “We know how stressed everyone can be during the holidays, especially this year with money so tight. We encourage people to bring groups of friends and just have fun. It’s a great time to just come out and let your ya-yas out.”

Murphy said that this Halloween, she and her staff will dress up in Medieval garb, so expect kings, queens, jokers and castles to be serving drinks to vampires, zombies and Presidential candidates at Soundview on Oct. 27.

“The best costumes in the world come out to our place for this,” she said of the decades-old Halloween party. “It’s really incredible how much time and creativity people put into it. I’m always amazed.”

Murphy offers prizes for the top costumes and $150 for first place. The party takes place Oct. 27 at 9 p.m. with a DJ spinning dance tunes and Halloween classics until 2 a.m. There is a fee at the door. Call 631-477-0666 for more information.
