Roanoke Vineyards to Open on Love Lane, Creative Director Heads to Stony Brook Southampton

New tasting room at former Model Nails space on iconic Mattituck street getting prepped for spring opening.

It's the provincial picture of heaven, right? Eat at the local café, hit the local cheesemonger and stop at the tasting room for a quick sip of the local wine. That's what's headed for Mattituck's Love Lane.

Creative Director Scott Sandell told Patch on Tuesday that the winery will open its second tasting room at 165 Love Lane, a storefront vacated in November when Model Nails closed up shop.

in Jamesport in December.

Sandell did not say when the new tasting room will open, but will help the winery get more of its wine in local hands.

"We thought having a second location that was slightly more convenient than the tasting room would make it easier for people to get Roanoke Wines — we don't wholesale to wine shops, so the wines have only been available in the tasting room, or by mail order," Sandell said.

That also means Roanoke's current tasting room and home base in Riverhead could become a member-only club for patrons of Roanoke's wine club, he said.

As for Sandell, a visual artist whose work goes beyond the wine labels he creates for Roanoke, he'll likely be uninvolved in the Love Lane opening. Sandell on April 1 will start his new job as head of a new visual arts program at , and one of his first projects will be to launch a summer workshop for artists at the college, he said.

"We will be throwing open the doors to our Almost Beachfront Digital Print Studio on 7/11, and the print shop will feature four wide-body printers that will be used in our classes in New Printmaking, and 21st Century Portraiture; from Facebook to Fabulous. I've also booked Dan DeSimone, the Lessing Rosenwald curator of rare and illustrated books from the Library of Congress to teach a class in artists' books," he said.

Another project includes creating prints with giant four feet by eight feet woodblocks that take a steamroller to operate.
