With an average of only 200 passengers daily boarding the Peconic Bay Water Jitney this past summer for a connection ride between Greenport and Sag Harbor, the ferry’s founders told the Southampton Press this week that the venture did not make enough money during its maiden summer to continue longterm as a private enterprise.
Though the ferry service, which began in late June, extended its run through Oct. 1 it still fell short of the 330 to 350 daily passengers that company President Geoff Lynch and partner Jim Ryan expected. As a result, the summer generated less than $200,000 in total revenue — not enough to get the project off the ground on a permanent basis, Lynch told the Press.
The businessmen said they are exploring the option of partnering with other transit companies and will discuss the results of the ferry’s trial run with Sag Harbor Village Board Members in November or December.
